29th May 1997. Things were different then in Muscat. Britain still owned Hong Kong. Nobody told the audience to switch off their phones because nobody had any. I distinctly remember Brian Campbell telling me how he squared up against a huge camel spider in his flat in Madinat Qaboos - you don't see many camel spiders in MQ these days ! Satellite dishes were only just starting to appear in Oman so people made their own entertainment. This was the best it got. I loved the evening then and having watched it many times over the years, love it even more now. The mistakes are often what makes it so good. I'll never forget McDougal and his dog winning at cricket, Len Williams was superb, the crazy Spellbinders annoying many with their irreverance, some beautiful songs, the compere in dinner jacket, the timeless frustration over those papers in "if i were a rich man".
