In May 2012, 46-year-old Urooj Khan thought he got lucky, buying the winning $1 million lottery ticket from a Chicago convenience store. But on July 19, Khan joined his wife, father-in-law and daughter for a curried lamb dinner--which turned out to be his last meal. That night he was rushed to the hospital but before dawn, was pronounced dead. The death certificate said he died of heart failure. Chicago Tribune reporter, Jeremy Gorner, who has been closely follow this case, describes the whodunit facts to Lawyers.com journalist Scott Alexander, in this video report. Gorner says Khan's death occurred a day after the Illinois lottery had cut the check and it had arrived at the Khans' home in August. Khan's wife, Shabana Ansari, had sole possession of the check. Urooj's brother, Imitiaz Khan, grew suspicious and asked the medical examiner to review the blood samples taken at the time of Khan's death. Khan's body was exhumed in January 2013. This time, the medical examiner stated the cause of death was cyanide poisoning. The question remains: Who killed Urooj Khan? Chicago police searched the family home and questioned Shabana for four hours. However, she was not charged. There were three people at home at the time of the poisoning and police still consider this an active murder investigation. Gorner says one law enforcement officer compared the case to an Agatha Christie novel. In probate court, the plot also thickens. In addition to the lottery winnings and his home, Khan owned several dry cleaning shops and some real estate. He died without a will, which opened the door to a court battle, pitting different family members against one another, over Khan's more than $2 million estate. Lawyers for Jasmeen, Khan's daughter from a prior marriage, want to make sure she gets her fair share of an inheritance. Meanwhile Shabana's lawyers are safeguarding her interests in the estate. Al-Haroon Husain, a partner at Himont Law Group, who represents Shabana, acknowledges his client seemed from day one to have been under suspicion. But he says detectives are taking on the criminal matter, while he's focused on the civil case. Another interesting fact in the case turns out that Shabana's father, one of the three other people home at the time of the murder, owed the IRS — $120,000.
