It's just a full adder with an additional buffer to fix a bit of timing. And the 'carry out' goes straight to the 'carry in' to keep the carry when the next bits add together. Such as 5 + 3 = 8 A: 101 B: 011 C + A + B = C S Step 1: 0 + 1 + 1 = 1 0 Step 2: 1 + 0 + 1 = 1 0 Step 3: 1 + 1 + 0 = 1 0 Step 4: 1 + 0 + 0 = 0 1 Reading the S output looks like this: S 1 :0 2 :0 4 :0 8: 1 The bits will need storing in some memory, then you'll have what looks like this: 1 0 0 0 in binary = 8 in decimal
