Hernia patients have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of AlloDerm, a product made from the skin tissue of cadavers. They claim once implanted, the AlloDerm stretches and fails, resulting in serious and painful abdominal injuries, often requiring additional surgery. A hernia is a painful condition that occurs when an organ or tissue bulges through a weak spot in muscle of the structure that contains it. Often it's an intestine that protrudes through the stomach wall. Hemera/ Thinkstock Surgeons will patch up the hole in reconstruction surgeries. More than 20 million hernia repair surgeries are performed worldwide each year, according to NYU Langone Medical Center. Hundreds of thousands of patients have had surgery using medical patches of AlloDerm, which is manufactured by LifeCell Corporation. Lawyers.com Editorial Director Betsy Kim interviews Sol Weiss, a shareholder in Anapol Schwartz, the lead law firm representing plaintiffs in the approximately 300 cases against LifeCell. The company, which has its principle place of business in Branchburg, New Jersey, did not respond to Lawyers.com's inquiries, at the time of publication of this article. The LifeCell website currently advertises AlloDerm as offering a range of benefits to surgeons and their patients for hernia repair. In this news video, Sol describes the problem with AlloDerm and the effort to take it off the market. The plaintiffs' and defense attorneys are selecting test cases to take to trial in Superior Court of Middlesex County, New Jersey. This will assess the value of the cases to help determine resolution for patients with similar medical problems.
