Why do bodybuilders avoid fruit? You'd think that their pursuit of the perfect body would lead them to eat more fruit, not less.
It really depends on the fruit. The problem is how many fruits are high in sugar.
Fruits are healthy. And they are rich in vitamins body builders need.
Tropical fruit like pineapples and oranges are healthy and delicious. Unfortunately, they are also high in sugar.
What about fruit that are lower in sugar?
Body builders typically have no problems eating apples, blueberries or bananas. These are rich in nutrients while low in calories.
Apples are a cornerstone of a lot of diets because they are high in fiber.
Body builders are also focused on efficiency. They want the nutrition but don't want to pack away two pounds of fruit to get it.
I've seen how many protein shakes body builders pack away. They drink it like women want to drink milk shakes.
They'll supplement a protein shake or oatmeal with a few fruits, such as throwing in strawberries or blueberries with a bowl of yogurt. But if they relied solely on fruit, meat and whole grains for both nutrition and calories, they'd spend more time cooking and eating and less in the gym.
And that much intake relative to burn would make them fat.
It's just a balance between intake and outgo. They're busy burning calories, and protein shakes and energy bars are a quick and easy way to get both calories and nutrients.
I've heard body builders describe fruit as almost toxic to their diets.
That's because some body builders think the fructose or natural sugar in many fruits is as bad as sugar from sugar cane. It isn't, but it has a bad rap.
Good. I'll tell my brother to suck it up, and at least eat the apple Mom packed in his lunch box.
